About

Our Mission:
The mission of the Veterans and Military ERG is to create a supportive and inclusive environment that recognizes and enhances the unique skills and leadership abilities of veterans and military personnel through networking, mentorship, and collaboration. This group will serve as a forum for veterans and military employees to share their experiences, voice their concerns, and gain visibility within the MIT community. Through structured networking, social events, and professional development opportunities, we aim to attract, support, and retain veteran and military employees in various roles across MIT.
The group is open to all faculty and staff within the MIT community.

In January, Major (Retired, US Air Force) Andrea Henshall was recognized by (then) Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Honorable Denis McDonough, for her research at MIT and her service to her fellow veterans.
Andrea is a founding member of the MIT Military and Veterans Employee Resource Group (ERG). She is a PhD Candidate and Research Assistant in the Autonomy and Embedded Robotics Accelerated (AERA) group in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS). Andrea’s research focuses on multiagent sequential decision-making and reinforcement learning, and her novel algorithms have been published internationally.
Outside of research, Andrea’s service to her fellow veterans focuses on guiding those applying to selective academic programs. Through her work with Service to School, the Warrior Scholar Project, and MIT graduate and undergraduate admissions, she authored a guide for veterans applying to top-tier universities, which she provides to interested applicants for free.
Andrea also led two related presentations at this year’s Student Veterans of America (SVA) National Conference (along with Alex Bustin, Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Admission and Director of Transfer and Military/Veteran Admission at Princeton University), the largest gathering of student veterans anywhere in the world.
Andrea spent 14 years in the Air Force and served as a Special Operations instructor pilot, completing 7 tours of combat in Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and the Philippines. She proudly continues her service through supporting her fellows veterans at and beyond MIT.
