Still Becoming MIT

Since its founding in 1861, MIT has been an experiment in community. While staying connected through the sentiments expressed by our motto (“mens et manus”—“mind and hand”) and, more recently, our values, the Institute community has continually responded to the changing world in which it operates.

Using the historical accounts compiled in Becoming MIT: Moments of Decision and Geoffrey Cohen’s “Belonging Framework” as a foundation, Still Becoming MIT is a fall 2024 workshop of 16 students, staff, and faculty who will explore the challenges and opportunities of working and living together, with a particular focus on antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of bias. Participants will participate in weekly sessions to build skills, model behaviors, and reflect on their values (lunch will be provided). At the conclusion of the project, members will serve as ambassadors for bridging differences and advocating for change across MIT.

Objectives

  • Reflect on personal values and professional identities
  • Model respectful disagreement, continuous learning, and productive advocacy for change
  • Build skills for effective criticism and improvement from within the Institute using the Giving Voice to Values framework
  • Promote a positive narrative about the academic year
  • Empower participants as ambassadors to help reset and reground the community in shared values
  • Build relationships across various units at MIT
