About the Deputy ICEO

Tracie D. Jones-Barrett

is MIT’s Deputy Institute Community and Equity Officer.

Previously, Jones-Barrett was the first-ever Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in MIT’s School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. She served on the SHASS Faculty Diversity Committee and was deeply engaged with the academic community. In collaboration with CMS/W, she received funding from the Racism Research Fund for the Witnessing Comics for Social Justice. She oversaw the SHASS Pre-Doc Program, helped plan and execute the Bearing Witness Conference, facilitated a workshop for the I Am A Leader Conference. In collaboration with Prof. Jeff Ravel, Jones-Barrett also developed the SHASS Lecturer Review. For these and other efforts, Jones-Barrett received a RISE award in the spring of 2023.

Previously, Jones-Barrett served as director of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, as well as an associate director of student affairs and assistant director for student diversity and inclusion programs, at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is also the founder of Adventure Girlz (2013-17), an experiential weeklong summer camp to serve junior high school girls, and was the vessel operations coordinator for the Freedom Schooner Amistad during the Atlantic Freedom Tour, where she collaborated with universities, museums, and non-profits at each port to provide programming and public tours aboard the vessel.

Raised in Laurelton, NY, Jones-Barrett received a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the Harvard Extension School and a master’s in higher education administration from Northeastern University, where she also earned her Ed.D. in higher education administration in the spring of 2023.
